Indigenous Water Safety & Activity Engagement Program

“Bush To Beach”

(Gulargambone, Coonamble, Walgett, Goodooga and Mungindi)

Beginning in August 2011, MPREC & Super Surf Camps will present a number of exciting opportunities to an initial five 'pilot' communities to gain "life skill" qualifications and experiences that include;

  • First Aid Certificates
  • Resuscitation Certificates
  • Bronze Medallion Awards
  • Pool Operations Qualifications
  • AUSWIM (Swim Teaching) Certificates
  • Aquatic Recreational Activities
  • Simulated Rescues (Lifeguard practice)
  • Water Competition & Skills

Ideally there will be two main groups that will benefit from these visits;

  • Seniors (aged 16 to 24 years) who can attend courses to gain certificates that assist with employment and
  • Juniors (aged 8 to 15 years) who can participate in a range of specialised aquatic activities just like those experienced by junior lifesavers on the coast in the various surf clubs.

This will be a great opportunity for all local members from CDEP's, schools, service providers, JSA and youth centres to complete a course and become qualified as a Lifeguard, Swim Instructor, Pool Operator, or to simply try their hand on a number of fun water craft and interesting rescue simulations.....

The aim is to offer the following in the suggested time frames:-

  1. First Aid & CPR Certification beginning August 21 – 27 2011
  2. Mon & Tue22-23 Coonamble Training Centre
  3. Thurs & Fri 25-26 Lightning Ridge Training Centre

Stage 2 Bronze Medallion Course -  October, 2011 (for two to three weeks…..)

At four locations from North to South…..beginning in Mungindi, Walgett, Coonamble & Gulargambone

Note: Goodooga will also be visited and shown a range of watercraft near the weir as well as rescue demonstrations

Each visit to these four communities will comprise;

·        Day 1 (3pm to 6pm @ Pool) Recreational Activities & BBQ

·        Day 2 Pool Bronze Medallion 8am to 4pm (then Aquatic Recreation on river or weir 5pm – 8pm)

·        Day 3 Pool Bronze Medallion 8am to 4pm

[REPEATED IN EACH OF THE FOUR COMMUNITIES ABOVE]

The key to this visit in October will be for Community activities focusing on fun, inclusion and participation to raise interest / awareness of water safety.

In February 2012, there is a proposed 1-2 week visit to the Gold Coast, QLD whereby those participants who demonstrate the greatest amount of interest, skill, leadership and achievement in the Programs will be invited to travel across to the Gold Coast to visit and integrate with local surf clubs and their member activities, including;

Surf Carnivals, Patrolling / Lifesaving, Life guarding duties, Bronze Medallion Camps, Club Training (water & beach) & Theme Parks
